About the Guide

Understanding Moebius Syndrome: A Practical Guide for Families, Educators, and Caregivers was written to help readers better understand the educational, social, communication, and life experiences often associated with Moebius syndrome.

Written by advocate and author Tim Smith, who has lived with Moebius syndrome throughout his life, the guide combines practical information, real-world examples, discussion activities, and educational resources designed to support understanding in schools, families, and communities.

Rather than focusing solely on medical information, the guide explores communication, friendship, classroom experiences, conflict resolution, adolescence, growing independence, and the ways understanding often develops through familiarity, experience, and meaningful interaction.

Whether you are a parent, teacher, counselor, caregiver, family member, student, or community member, this guide offers practical insight into understanding Moebius syndrome beyond first impressions.

A central theme throughout the guide is the importance of communication and collaboration between families, educators, and support systems as they work together to support students and individuals living with Moebius syndrome.

In addition, purchasers of the guide may request that one complimentary digital Educator Resource Kit be sent directly to a school or homeschooling educator of their choosing, subject to the terms outlined below.

About the Contributor

Dr. Catherine Barbe, who wrote the Foreword for this guide, is a pediatric psychologist practicing in Québec, Canada. She has developed her clinical expertise within the health and social services network, where she works with a multicultural pediatric population, assessing and supporting children with a range of physical, sensory, and neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism spectrum disorder and global developmental delay. She is also a lecturer and supervises psychology interns.

Since 2019, her practice has focused on the differential diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and related conditions, particularly in the context of co-occurring physical and sensory impairments, as well as genetic or neurological syndromes.
