How a Rare Condition Ended Up With a Kentucky Proclamation

Earlier this year, Kentucky issued its first-ever statewide proclamation recognizing Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day.
This was also the first and only year we have ever sent out proclamation requests.
Only one came back approved — and that naturally raises the question: why just one?
The answer is straightforward. Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day is still not well known, especially within government offices. Some officials misunderstood the request as a commercial effort. Others had no precedent to rely on. Without prior proclamations, many offices hesitate — not out of indifference, but because nothing like this had been formally recognized before.
Until now.
The Kentucky proclamation began when a Moebius syndrome family living in the state reached out and asked for help explaining why the day matters. We shared the history, the purpose, and the significance of this year marking the 15th anniversary of Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day.
Kentucky listened.
By issuing this proclamation, Kentucky became the first state to formally recognize the day. That single action created something essential: precedent.
And precedent changes everything.
This proclamation does not remove daily challenges or erase misunderstanding. What it does do is publicly acknowledge that Moebius syndrome exists — and that the people and families affected are worth recognizing in civic space, not just private conversations.
For the first time, future proclamation requests are no longer asking officials to take a leap. They are asking them to follow a path that has already been opened.
This is where momentum matters
A first only matters if it’s seen.
That’s why this moment is meant to be shared.
Share the blog.
Share the proclamation.
Share the fact that a historic first has already happened.
Every share helps officials recognize the name. Every share helps the public understand the purpose. And every share makes the next proclamation easier to say yes to.
