Preston Ashby’s Story

Owensboro, Kentucky

Preston Ashby is 20 years old and lives in Owensboro, Kentucky. From the very beginning, his life has been defined not by limits, but by steady progress, patience, and determination.

The Early Days

When Preston was born, it was immediately clear that something wasn’t right. He was unable to nurse and needed oxygen shortly after birth. Because of these complications, he was flown by plane to Kosair Hospital in Louisville, where he spent several months in the NICU.

A few days into his stay, doctors diagnosed Preston with Moebius syndrome. Hearing those words was devastating. His family was told he might never smile, might not walk, and that much of his future was unknown. That day remains one of the hardest moments they have ever faced.

Challenges, Therapy, and Strength

Preston faced significant physical challenges early in life. He struggled to use his hands, but years of occupational therapy helped him learn how to feed himself, play with toys as a child, and later develop a love for working with beads.

Walking was another long journey. Preston had clubfoot surgery at just one year old, followed by another surgery later to correct his heel so he could wear a prosthetic. Even then, progress was slow. He spent years in therapy and was still using a wheelchair during grade school.

Today, Preston walks independently and can manage stairs—milestones that once felt impossibly far away. These achievements reflect years of effort, perseverance, and unwavering support.

In 2025, Preston reached another major milestone: he graduated from high school. He continues to work on self-help skills and uses a communication device to support his daily interactions.

Life Today

Preston will continue attending school through March 2026 and will then transition to the Opportunity Center, where he currently receives occupational therapy and works on daily living skills.

He enjoys being out in the community several hours each week—going out to eat, shopping for snacks, and simply being part of everyday life.

At home, Preston has a special bond with his dog, Buddy, a Cane Corso. Despite the breed’s reputation, Buddy is incredibly gentle with Preston and seems to instinctively understand that his role is to protect him.

What Brings Preston Joy

Preston finds joy in many simple but meaningful moments. He loves playing with beads, drinking Coke, and eating—he’s a big eater and enjoys mealtime. Time with family means everything to him. When his sister comes home to visit, his happiness is unmistakable. He also loves visiting his grandmother, whom he affectionately calls “Mimmy.”

Preston enjoys being talked to and loves when someone tickles him—his laughter fills the room. Though he doesn’t speak, his joy and connection are always clear.

Hard Moments

Communication can still be frustrating at times, especially when Preston wants to express specific needs like food or drinks. He cannot always use his device for these moments, but he continues to improve. Through pointing, gestures, and persistence, Preston finds ways to be understood.

Though nonverbal, Preston adapts and grows every day. His family describes him as a true blessing—someone who may not smile with his mouth, but who smiles clearly with his eyes.

A Message for Other Families

Preston’s family shares this message with others:

Time is on your side. Children with Moebius grow stronger with time. If you can attend a Moebius conference, go—it’s an incredible source of information, encouragement, and connection. Being surrounded by other families and learning from doctors and advocates makes a real difference.
